Jaguar: Things I’m working on now

The radiator, Sills and Cylinderhead

25th jan 2008

MOT. the sill was finished, valveclearance is fine now. had some trouble getting the headlights to work. but sorted that out. Car failed MOT because uneven breaking front, handbrakes did not work at all. and one brake kos was leaking.

Sill rot,

Yesterday I’ve been working hard on the righthand side sill. Reconstruction is almost complete. I made some pictures. I’ll post them here tomorrow.

Sill rot,

I cut out the rotten part of the left front sill. I intened to weld it up today but I ran out of sheet metal and welding gas.

Valve clearance

The engine runs fine again. Idling is a bit high at 1100 rpm but I trust that the ECU will adjust.

Here are the results of my valveclearance adjustments using the grindingmethod. Shim size new is the result of this method when the shim size fitted was 2,16mm or less (thinner is not available)

I made sure I did not make the shim so thin that it came flush with the fitting at the end of the valve.

You can see that valve clearance is according to spec. I checked all the valves with a feeler gage.

EXTRA VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT on the jaguar xj-6

The cylinderhead is being reconditioned but the car has to be MOT’d before the 25th of januari. I won’t be able to exchange the heads beforehand. However…the car is running like a dog. I contemplated grindig of the valve stems but looking at them I concluded that grinding off the stems won’t work because of lack of space and the risc of debri.

To get more time for a cylinderhead recon when valve clearance is reduced to zero because of valveseat wear and no thinner shims are available. GRIND them off..like this:

I did it yesterday and my Exhaust valve clearance is….like new! (between 0.012” and 0.014”) ready for the MOT the 25th. I’ll have to do the intakevalves next.

While grinding , the top shim starts spinning a bit which provides an even “shave”. I shaved down a 2,30 mm shim to 1,90mm. i’was able to choose a precision of about 0,01mm ! The shims come flush with the valvespringretainer around 1,85mm so shaving off more is no use. But I now have an extra 0,26mm of extra clearance adjustment….

*  The radiator started leaking. I removed the bonnet and managed to repair it but I discovered why there is always a brown haze of fine derbi over the engine. It’s the cooling fins deteriorating. Time for a new radiator?

* Right outer sill developed a rust hole. I cut the rusted parts out and ordered new sill but they where out of stock at Limora’s. I will have to weld it before the 25th.

*The cylinderhead Is finaly beeing reconditioned. I will probably not succeed in exchanging them before the MOT, so I decided to try and grind of a bit from the valve stems to get the right valve clearance. Quick and dirty… but I would like to take my time for the head swich. Getting the manifolds of of the spare head was a intensive job.
